Faculty of Information and Applied Technologies

The Faculty of Information and Applied Technologies is one of the oldest faculties of Vasyl’ Stus DonNU, which grew and developed together with the university, went through the same stages of historical evolution. Today it combines the best traditions and modern achievements of Ukrainian and world education.

In 1941, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics was established at the Stalin State Pedagogical Institute, as Vasyl Stus DonNU was then called. Its first dean was Ya.S. Miroshnichenko. The activities of the faculty were interrupted by the war and began to resume after the liberation of the region from German occupation. The next deans were OI Borodin, SF Ovcharenko.

In 1965, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics was divided into two independent: Mathematical and Physical. The first dean of the Faculty of Mathematics was OI Borodin. After him, this position was held by VP Shevchenko, Yu.V. Mysovsky, P.M. Velichko.

Initially, the faculty had one department of mathematics, which had five teaching rooms. In the year of the university’s founding (1965), the Faculty of Mathematics was established in close connection with the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

In 1966, new departments were created: mathematical analysis and theory of functions; Department of Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics, Department of Algebra and Probability Theory.

The Department of Theory of Elasticity and Computational Mathematics was established by a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Professor OS Cosmodamian. His scientific school is known far beyond Ukraine, because it develops a wide range of fundamental problems. The Department of Applied Mathematics and Theory of Control Systems was founded by Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Professor PV Харламов.
The Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics was established later – in fact in 1968, and officially – in 1969.

In 1969, a council for the defense of PhD theses was established.

Over time, the faculty honed the educational process, improved the quality of educational programs, conducted extensive work on writing and publishing manuals and textbooks, scientific monographs. The faculty has a strong team of scholars, many of whom are invited to international conferences to give lectures.

The commission of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, which in 1994 inspected the work of the university in connection with accreditation, recognized the faculty as one of the leading in Ukraine. and in the scientific process.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technologies of Vasyl’ Stus DonNU is one of the leading educational centers of Ukraine in the field of fundamental and applied mathematics, information computer technologies, applied statistics, actuarial and financial mathematics, methods of specialized teaching of mathematics and informatics.

In 2019, the structure of the faculty included the Department of Political Science and Public Administration and the Department of Journalism. The faculty was renamed into the faculty of information and applied technologies.
